Hilda Goldwag was born to a Jewish family in Vienna but, after taking her degree in art, left for England in 1939 to escape Nazi persecution. Goldwag’s family all perished. She has recently received critical acclaim for her unique paintings of urban Glasgow in the mid-to-late twentieth century. Goldwag moved to Glasgow in 1940 and, despite having to work in other professions, resumed painting and exhibiting in the early 1950s.
