Sammy Stein
Chairman of Glasgow Friends of Israel
“Ten Years of Israel Advocacy and Fighting Antisemitism on the Streets of Glasgow”
Sammy’s parents were born in Hungary and Poland and moved to Palestine in the 1930s where they met and married and where Sammy was born. Later, his father discovered that his brother had survived the Holocaust, was living in Glasgow, and had established Steinschreiber the Butcher. Sammy’s family moved to Scotland in 1957 to help run Steinschreiber. They became members of Queens Park Shul where Sammy and his brother joined the choir.
Sammy returned to Israel in 1969 where, as a citizen, he served in the army for 6 years. On his return to Glasgow he pursued a career in IT.
Glasgow Friends of Israel (GFI) was established in 2015 following the 2014 Gaza War which led to regular anti-Israel rhetoric across UK media. GFI’s main activity has been its peace advocacy stall which is manned every Saturday on Buchanan Street, where numerous members of the public stop to discuss and learn about the Israel-Palestine conflict.
